TomTom Captures #2 Market Share For Mobile Navigation in US
America has chosen TomTom as the #2 brand for mobile navigation during the fourth quarter of 2005 - accounting for 25 percent of unit sales, according to recently released retail sales data from The NPD Group, one of the leading providers of retail market information. NPD information is based on data provided by a panel of 2.5 million consumers and point-of-sales tracking results from 600 retail partners worldwide.
TomTom opened its US headquarters in December 2002 and major retailers started selling the TomTom GO 300 and TomTom GO 700 personal GPS units in June 2005. In this short period of time, the GO product line jumped from 7 percent market share in June to 25 percent market share in December 2005, taking the #2 position in the mobile navigation market.
"We are extremely pleased with the recent NPD results showing TomTom’s #2 position in mobile navigation," said Jocelyn Vigreux, President of TomTom USA. "This data shows that from the time we started selling the GO line, hundreds of thousands of new customers have turned to TomTom to meet their portable navigation needs. We strongly believe that we have only hit the tip of the iceberg with these performance numbers. We have millions of new customers to attract and believe that even today’s TomTom GO buyers will become purchasers of higher-performance TomTom portable navigation devices in the future."
The portable navigation category proved to be one of the best selling segments in the consumer electronics industry this holiday season, and it is also one of the most competitive. NPD data shows that portable navigation sales in Q4 2005 grew 192% compared to sales in the same quarter the prior year.
TomTom GO 300 and TomTom GO 700 are TomTom’s top of the line, all-in-one navigation devices. They are designed to be incredibly easy to use and understand. A crystal-clear color screen guides the driver in 3D, while voice instruction in 35 language choices navigates the driver to any address in the US or Canada. The driver simply picks a destination, chooses the type of route they prefer (ie: fastest, shortest, avoid highways) and the TomTom GO guides the driver from door to door. Millions of points of interest are available to choose from, like gas stations, restaurants and hotels. The build in Bluetooth(TM) connection provides easy hands-free calling with the TomTom GO 700 model. The driver only needs to tap the screen to accept or make calls.
