FineDrive 400 will use WindSpring Micro Data Format
WindSpring, a data miniaturization innovator, today announced that Fine Digital USA, has licensed the patented WindSpring technology for integration into its FineDrive 400 personal navigation devices (PNDs). WindSpring technology will improve mapping application performance and enable Fine Digital to reduce the overall cost of devices for consumers.
WindSpring’s patented Data Miniaturization Technology (DMT(TM)) shrinks and transforms large mapping and data files into a Micro Data Format (MDF(TM)). The MDF format allows the data files to retain all original data performance attributes while enabling high-speed access and full manipulation of data, including high-speed seek, search, edit and display in the miniaturized state. In addition, MDF is uniquely suited for space-constrained applications such as GPS Navigation, where large amounts of data can slow system performance and data access.
By transforming mapping and Point of Interest (POI) data files to MDF, the effective storage capacity of the FineDrive 400 devices can be substantially increased without increasing overall hardware costs, thereby avoiding costly hardware additions. MDF also improves device reliability and performance by eliminating the need for more expensive and unreliable mini-hard drive solutions.
"Fine Digital is focused on technology innovation to help drive consumer adoption of GPS navigation devices by developing top-quality products at affordable price points without sacrificing performance or functionality," said Richard Ryu, COO of Fine Digital USA. "The WindSpring DMT technology will help us deliver on our promise of convenience and performance benefits for our customers and address the challenges associated with large mapping databases."
"WindSpring is delighted to be a contributor to the success of this new generation of the FineDrive 400," said Robert F. Mitro, WindSpring Chairman and CEO. "Our ability to enable 100% functionality in miniaturized data is going to be a major factor in the continued market penetration of PNDs and other map-based devices."
