Make every mile count with Forerunner 405CX
Announced as the world’s best runners prepare for the Paris and Boston marathons, Forerunner 405CX adds increased accuracy in heart rate-based calorie computation and improved comfort to the Forerunner 405 model that took the fitness world by storm.
Using algorithms developed by exercise scientists and world-class athletes, Forerunner 405CX monitors the micro changes in a user’s heart rate and uses that detailed information to better calculate the number of calories burned during aerobic activity. Whether out running, on a bike, in step class or on a hike, Forerunner 405CX users will get instant gratification as they see the results of their hard work. And those workouts will be more comfortable than ever, as users will have the choice of two additional form-fitting bands to accommodate large and small wrists alike. At only 60 grams and available in a new deep blue color, Forerunner 405CX fits in at the gym or around the office.
In developing the Forerunner 405CX and its heart rate-based calorie computation, Garmin worked with Firstbeat Technologies Ltd., a technology company based in Finland. Firstbeat is an industry leader in heart rate analysis, specializing in developing user-centered software solutions for heart beat signal analysis in exercise and sports, weight management, and stress monitoring applications. In addition to monitoring heart rate and counting calories with precision, Forerunner 405CX tracks speed, distance and location accurately and effortlessly, and the revolutionary patent-pending touch bezel on the face of the watch makes navigating the options easier than ever. Simply by tapping, holding or running a finger along the bezel, runners can begin a new workout, access their training history or challenge a Virtual Partner™. The Forerunner 405CX makes training with a Virtual Partner easy and efficient. Runners can adjust the Virtual Partner’s pace without stopping in the middle of a workout, and the Virtual Partner is always on and ready for a challenge.
Once the workout is done, the training is far from over. Using ANT+ technology, the Forerunner 405CX sends workout data to the user’s PC or Mac via automatic wireless data transfer. There’s no need to take off the watch or bother with cables as the computer automatically syncs with the Forerunner 405CX once it’s in close proximity. And the data transfer is a two-way street. Runners, joggers, cyclists and hikers can send courses, goals and workouts to their Forerunner 405CX before they begin, and then the data gets sent back to the user’s computer when the workout is over. Athletes can log their workouts, track their totals, set goals, share workouts with coaches, friends and family and participate in an online fitness community at Garmin ConnectSM — Garmin’s online training site. Users can also share courses and workout data from one Forerunner 405CX to another through wireless data transfer.

Portable unit kicks in when GPS fades
(Credit: Seer Technology) Ahoy, GPS -stranded motorist. Stop banging the dashboard, and consider this timely reincarnation of dead reckoning to help you find your way out of “GPS-denied environments,” or at least alert others to where you can be found. Seer Technology is offering a miniature, self-contained, electronic navigation unit called NaviSeer that mixes GPS and DR in a complex gumbo of hardware and proprietary algorithms to deliver user location in real time. It does this by blending the output from three gyros, three accelerometers (one at each axis,) a magnetometer , and a baro altimeter, and then running it through a Kalman filter. The result: coordinates accurate to within less than a yard, according to Seer. And no, it “does not require sensors to be worn on the legs or feet.” … Originally posted at Military Tech

Jake’s Journal: Lucky Winners in the Land of Oregon
So I just sent out an email to four people - Steven in Westminster, CA; Emily in Scott Depot, WV; Kyle in Riverton, UT; and Michael in Barstow, CA - and I usually don’t share such notes but I thought you might want to congratulate these four if you know them … or visit the Land of Oregon to see what you missed … or start searching for Garmin geocoins in random caches.
I hope this note finds you well – because we have some great news for you. You must have had a pretty good time in Garmin’s Land of Oregon minisite, because of the countless visitors – and the thousands who completed every task asked of them – you’re one of just four winners!
As a result of your keen eye, quick wit and adventurous spirit, we’re sending you an Oregon 400t touchscreen handheld device, preloaded with topo maps of the entire U.S. and capable of sharing data with other nearby Oregon and Colorado units. We’re also sending you two limited-edition Oregon geocoins, with a little favor to ask. One of the geocoins is for you, no strings attached. The other is for you to stash, thus passing along the fun of geocaching and the thrill of discovery. You see, these coins aren’t available for purchase. The only way to get them is from Garmin HQ or to find one that’s been stashed. Then send me the cache location where you hid the coin so that I can keep an eye on the logs and see when and where they’re found. Just like that, cachers around the world will have memorable stories to share at garmin.blogs.com and at geocaching forums and gatherings, and it will be thanks to you!
So congratulations again to Steven, Emily, Kyle and Michael, and even though the contest has ended, the adventures continue in the Land of Oregon … and beyond. And if you find one of those limited-edition coins that has been stashed, send us your story and we’ll share it on the blog.

Navigation helps Ben to relax and recover
Garmin-sponsored triathlete Ben Collins shares his training and racing experiences with the Garmin Edge 705 and Forerunner 405.
Last week I was beginning my recovery for the Mooloolaba World Cup so I was able to do a few easy rides around Honolulu with the express purpose of finding great views and sharing time with other athletes around the area. I rode Tantalus with Courtenay Brown, and found out that she is fully capable of making my recovery workout into a not-so-easy tempo session. She dropped me about two thirds of the way up the 8km climb and didn’t even give the courtesy of acknowledging my plea of, “wait for me at the top!”
A few of my more adventurous outings include a run around the endless maze of cane fields on the North Shore of Oahu, and a swim with dolphins at Waimea Bay. And by “with” I mean I could hear them, but never did get close enough to see them despite 20m visibility in the crisp ocean waters. Riding new routes and running through unknown neighborhoods was extremely fun and helped me relax and recover. I relished in the exploratory opportunities granted to me by my Edge 705 and Forerunner 405 by taking new roads and never having to worry about finding my way home. It was fun.
