Edge-810-510Today we officially announced the Edge 810/510 and Garmin Connect Mobile app for cyclists who want accuracy and reliability when tracking their statistics and location for racing, training and recreation. The Edge 810 and 510 are Garmin’s first dedicated cycling devices with real-time connectivity and combine the most popular aspects of the industry-leading Edge 800/500 while adding advanced connected features through a smartphone. The new user-friendly interface, along with live tracking, social media sharing and real-time weather updates make them perfect for training, touring and riding on the trail. The Edge 810 and 510 will debut at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES South Hall 4 – 35812), where they will be prominently displayed.

“With these new connected Edge devices, riders can continue to expect robust data, industry leading accuracy and durability that cyclists have come to know from Garmin,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “Using the connectivity through smartphones, we will enable cyclists to take advantage of features such as real-time tracking and instant uploads, while keeping their phones safe in their saddle bags and relying on the power of the Edge on their handlebars, to provide accurate data in all conditions.”

The Edge 810 is the perfect choice for the cyclist who wants the ultimate performance and navigation machine. This new Edge features a sleek 2.6” color display, up to 17-hours of battery life, and a newly redesigned and simplified touchscreen interface. The 810 is compatible with optional detailed street or TOPO maps including BirdsEye Satellite Imagery, so it can guide cyclists for touring, commuting or extended activities where they might need onboard maps and navigation. Because it’s GPS-enabled and its navigation capabilities require no data usage, the Edge 810 is a perfect choice anywhere in the world.

The Edge 510 was designed specifically for performance driven cyclists and is a light-weight (80g) compact option. The 510 features a similar user interface to the 810, boasts a new 2.2” sunlight readable touchscreen display and is compatible with both GPS and GLONASS satellites for faster satellite acquisition and improved signal lock. The 510 is suited for the most challenging conditions, such as canyons and adventures with heavy tree cover. The Edge 510 is rugged, waterproof and has up to a 20-hour battery life. The touchscreen is easy to operate, even with a gloved finger and when wet. It also comes with a tether to ensure the device doesn't travel far in the event of a spill. To see the Edge 810 and 510 in action, go to www.garmin.com/edge.

Both the Edge 810 and 510 accurately track speed, distance, time, GPS position, elevation, calories burned, ascent and descent. For even more real-time data on display, the 810 and 510 sync wirelessly through ANT+™ technology with compatible third-party power meters as well as Garmin heart rate monitors and speed/cadence sensors. For extra-precise ascent and descent data, they incorporate a barometric altimeter to pinpoint changes in elevation. The new activity profiles feature allows cyclists to customize data fields and device settings based on their cycling activity, such as training, racing, or road and mountain biking. Switch profiles with a simple swipe of the touchscreen and the device will be set up to show the data riders need for that ride. When a ride is complete, the 810 and 510 display any new personal records achieved, such as farthest distance, most ascent gained and more.

The Edge 810 and 510 offer a suite of connected features when paired with a cyclist’s smartphone (Apple® or Android™) and the Garmin Connect Mobile app. This allows riders to gain comprehensive, accurate ride data from a dedicated device, while keeping their phone out of the elements and saving its battery in case of an emergency. The Edge tracks the data and sends it to the phone using a Bluetooth® connection. This connection allows cyclists to share all the details of their rides with friends, family and social media contacts. Cyclists can post an update immediately after their ride or race with details from their completed activity. Riders can create posts via their smartphone, and the robust ride data’s already there, thanks to the interface with Garmin Connect Mobile.

Live Tracking: The LiveTrack feature allows cyclists’ friends and family to follow their races and training rides in real-time. Invite followers using email or social media, so they can view live data on a Garmin Connect tracking page on a smartphone, desktop or tablet. Once they receive an email invite, they can click to follow and see cyclists’ stats like speed and distance, heart rate (optional), cadence and power (optional), and location on the map. If riders go out for a solo early morning ride, why not give loved ones the peace of mind by using Garmin’s LiveTrack feature. The Garmin-Sharp professional cycling team, for which we have been a title sponsor since 2008, will be using this Livetrack feature during its training rides—giving team management and coaches a real-time look at their efforts.

Weather: Get real-time weather conditions, forecasts and alerts (in areas with coverage) directly on the Edge 810 and 510 when they’re paired with a smartphone and the Garmin Connect Mobile app. This feature is useful for extended rides, and it lets cyclists keep their smartphone safe and dry, while the weather data they need is at their fingertips.

Wireless Data Transfers: Now cyclists of all levels can instantly store, share and analyze every detail of their ride— all from the road. The Garmin Connect Mobile app allows for wireless uploads of completed activities from the Edge 810/510 as soon as cyclists finish recording an activity. Riders choose whether activities are automatically or manually uploaded. Once a ride has posted to Garmin Connect, their own “connections” can view them within one of the world’s largest online fitness communities. Riders can also search their courses and workouts stored at Garmin Connect, download to their smartphone, then send directly to their Edge device — wirelessly. Cyclists can then navigate to the start of the course and use the Virtual Partner® feature on the Edge to follow and even race those previous rides in real-time.

Mounting options include a new out-front mount for heads-up positioning and a standard quarter-turn mount.

The Edge 810 is available now and has suggested retail price of $499.99 and the Edge 510 will be available Q1 2013 for $329.99. The Garmin Connect Mobile app will be available January 10, 2013. The connected Edge 810 and 510 along with the Garmin Connect Mobile app are the latest solutions from Garmin’s expanding fitness segment, which focuses on developing technologies and innovations to enhance users’ lives and promotes healthy and active lifestyles.  Whether it’s running, cycling, or other athletic pursuits, Garmin fitness devices are becoming essential tools for athletes both amateur and elite.  For more about features, pricing and availability, as well as information about Garmin’s other fitness products and services, go to www.garmin.com/intosports, www.garmin.blogs.com and http://twitter.com/garmin

Wish-List-WednesdayI've known my sister my whole life, and I never knew she had the ability to shriek at that volume or pitch. Yet there I was, worried for all of the glassware in her house when she unwrapped her Christmas present a couple years ago. A busy mom of two great teens with sports and school schedules defying the laws of physics, the only thing on her wish list is more time. And the time that she has, she wants to use as efficiently as possible. So we bought her a nuvi.

It was a pretty basic model, but you would've thought I handed her the keys to a time machine. Her nuvi meant less time studying maps and printing out directions, and more time around the dinner table. It meant she need not worry about being late to a game or concert. And weekends became less stressful with clear directions from Ballpark A to Schoolyard B to Stadium C and all of the potential lunch stops in between.

She told me shortly after – and it's something I hear often from friends at trade shows and customers on Twitter – "I LOVE my Garmin!" Then I saw it pop up as a hashtag on Twitter#lovemygarmin – and strangers' stories were being sewn together. So it's in that spirit of giving, sharing and thanking, that we'll celebrate your stories this holiday season and beyond through the #lovemygarmin hashtag. And for more reasons to celebrate, watch for details this week as our friends at AnotherMotherRunner.com are even doing a #lovemygarmin giveaway to fuel the fun. Shrieking is optional.

610
Forerunner610_special_side-smFor
nearly a year and a half, I’ve been fast friends with my touchscreen Forerunner
610
. It has minded my miles through training for and racing two half marathons,
a 20-mile trail race, and several shorter races in between. It has also been on-hand to log
some of my cycling miles since it has a bike mode and talks to my cadence
sensor and heart rate monitor, just like my Edge does. With all the ground we’ve covered together, I couldn’t imagine loving
another Forerunner quite the same. That is, until another caught my eye — the
new special-edition 610 with stone white band and some sweet teal and green
accents. This model has all the features of the orignal Forerunner 610, just with a fresh new look. While I’m no fitness fashionista (never worn a running skirt and I
could care less what color my latest pair of shoes are, as long as my feet are
happy), I have to say, the special-edition Forerunner 610 is just my style. Not that I try to be matchy-matchy with my running attire, but see how it looks right at home
with my favorite running shirt!

Here
are a few more reasons why the 610 is the watch for me.

1.
Touchscreen: I love being able to tap, swipe or scroll to access my data and
change pages or settings.

GC workouts 2.
Advanced workouts: the 610 is one of a few watches in the Forerunner family
with this special perk. This feature lets you create a workout with multiple
steps and goals based on distance, time, pace, heart rate or cadence. As you do
the workout, the 610 will guide you through each workout step and alert you
with vibration and audible alerts when you need to speed up, slow down or when
you’re right in the sweet spot. You can create advanced workouts on the watch
or in Garmin Connect (super easy to do in Connect) and then send to your watch. Right now, this feature has
saved my bacon in training for my next half — which happens to be tomorrow. I’m
hoping to match or beat my current half marathon PR, on a course that’s
slightly hillacious, so being diligent with my speedwork was a must. Here's how one of those workouts looks in Garmin Connect.

3. Wireless: a seemingly small detail, but I love that I don’t have to plug in my
610 to transfer data to Garmin Connect. When the watch is in range of my
computer (Mac or PC), the USB ANT Stick grabs the data from my watch and sends
it to Connect. Then I can hit the Connect site on my own time and obsess over
the details of my run. Same deal when I want to send a workout or course to my
watch — set it up in Connect, click “send to device” and it’s there.

what world-class marathoner and silver medalist Meb Keflezighi says about the
Forerunner 610.

Rwhalf-logoThis past weekend we were honored to be a part of the first ever Runner's World Half Marathon and Festival in Bethlehem, PA. The energy brought to this, once World leader in the steel industry, town was spectacular as thousands of runners from around the U.S. and even the world came to partake in a weekend all about running. Also on site, were Olympians Julius Achon, Derrick Adkins (Gold Medal '96 Atlanta 400m hurdles), Shalane Flanagan (Bronze Medal '08 Beijing 10k), ultra-marathoner Dean Karnazes, and the inspirational Matt Long. And we cPace Teamertainly can't leave out the editorial crew at RW, including its Chief Running Officer Bart Yasso. Runners had the chance to chose from a 5k, 10k and half marathon or could sign up for the "hat trick" and do all three!

The Garmin Pace team was out in full force and were armed with Forerunner 10 running watches to keep them on track. These pacers are machines, with most of them coming across the finish line within less than a minute of their goals.

Many of the weekend's finishers will be toeing the line again, in just a couple weeks, at the NYC Marathon. Garmin athlete, Olympian and S10ilver Medalist in the marathon Meb Keflezighi has been preparing for this race since finishing 4th at this year's games in London. We sat down with Meb to chat about his training and up coming race which he won in 2009:

Garmin:
Do you feel extra motivation coming off
such a great performance in London?

Meb: I am happy with the results from the London Olympics. I
had a lot of problems during the race and through perseverance I was was able
to go from 20th place to 4th place. Check out my London blog post for all of
the details.

Garmin: Have you approached your training
differently for this year’s NYC Marathon since your fitness was at such a high
level this summer?

Meb: I did not approach my training for this year's NYC Marathon any
differently than in previous years.
13I took two and half week off because
of severe blisters I got from the cobblestones and the irritation from the turns
in London. Nonetheless, I worked very hard to cover the three major areas
of marathon preparation:  tempos, long runs and intervals. Thanks to God
and my support team in Mammoth and San Diego, I have been able to stay healthy during this preparation and got up to 130 miles a week. I am still dealing with and
managing the sensitive blister spot with less than two weeks before the big race. Thanks to
Garmin and my Forerunner for making it easy to keep track of my mileage and pace, especially
when I am traveling. Staying healthy has allowed me to build on the
strength which I built over the summer. I was getting stronger for the Olympic
Marathon this summer, but I was about 2-3 weeks from being at my peak
2fitness.
Now, with the hard work before London and continued momentum from
training over the fall, I feel I should be competitive in New York on Nov. 4th.

Garmin: What advice would you give a first time NYC
Marathon runner?

Meb: It is a magical place and spot to do a
marathon. This will
my my 8th time racing the NYC marathon in the last 10 years. People dream
to visit New York City….just like I used to dream. Now, you have the
opportunity to do sight seeing with your feet on the 26.2 mile tour of the Big
Apple. Enjoy the moment, the crowd and the sights. Please take the
tangents of the streets if you see it because it is very safe when the road is
closed. New York is the capital of the world and running the New York City
Marathon is a unique opportunity to see the City at its very best. My only advice is to be patient and be strong when you get to Central
Park.

Garmin: Why do you love this race so much?

Meb: Like I said, this is my 8th time running the ING New York City Marathon. I
ran my debut marathon in NYC in 2002 and when I crossed the finish line, I
never wanted to do another marathon.  However,
1 after I came to my full
senses I wanted to win the biggest marathon in the world. Mary Wittenberg (race director) and
the rest of NYRR team have been fun and fair to me over the years. The
NYRR gave me a great stage to compete and I hope I have delivered over the
years. New York City is my home away from home. I have so many
friends and fans that I cannot imagine being anywhere else on the first Sunday
of November. New York City has been the city where I have competed the
most during my professional career, including the 8k USA Championships, the
Healthy Kidney 10k, the NYC Half Marathon and the Full marathon. I have
great memories in the big apple.

Photo 1We shuffled back to the trucks, feet weary and hunting vests
laden with sharptailed grouse and Hungarian partridge that we had earned during
our nearly two-hour walk through the Central Montana prairies.  This was the proving grounds for the Alpha,
Garmin's new track-and-train system for sporting dogs that was developed in
conjunction with Tri-Tronics, the leader in electronic dog training.

I wonder how far we  walked, I said to no one in
particular.  See, for the uninitiated, a
bird hunter is never sure how far they travel on any given hunt.  During the best walks, you're continually
distracted by dogs, birds, conversations, and of course, the rugged 360-degree
panorama of rolling hills and rugged mountains.
Of course, I would soon know precisely how far I had traveled this
morning.

IMAG0309

Using the Alpha's bright touchscreen display, I quickly
called up my trip computer.  We had
slogged nearly six miles in just under two hours – a pretty quick pace for bird
hunting.  That's nothing compared to the
fleet-footed distance runners at Garmin,
I reminded myself.  Of course, they're not packing 20-pound
packs and seven-pound shotguns over rocky, sandy, uneven ground.

It was then that I called up the "dog info" page
for my three-year-old English pointer, LuLu.
Her stats would put us all to shame.
In an hour and 45 minutes, she had covered nearly 21 miles of ground!

IMAG0326Of course, this sort of canine technology is relatively new
stuff, and an area that both Garmin and Tri-Tronics have pioneered.  During my lifetime, electronic training
collars have become standard equipment for professionals and amateurs alike,
allowing trainers and hunters to control their dogs much further than any
leash.  And of course, keeping an eye on
your dog via GPS satellites is even newer technology, only five or six years
old.

The Alpha ups the ante, combining both technologies into one
elegant device.  You can track and train
up to 20 dogs up to nine miles away, and receive alerts when your canine
companion has found game.  The unit is
pre-loaded with topo maps, so you know if you're nearing a busy road.  You can even track your two-legged hunting
buddies who have an Alpha.  All of that
is cool, but it wouldn't be worth a whit if it was difficult to use.  Thanks to the touchscreen (who doesn't have a
smartphone these days?) and the geniuses in engineering, everything is laid out
so that important information is literally at your fingertips, while everything
else is in the background until you need it.
MontanaMccardle

You'd think all this high-tech wizardry might detract from
the simple pleasure of bird hunting.  Not
really.  There's no longer incessant
hollering for a dog, and there's no sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach
when your prized pointing dog hasn't checked in for a couple of minutes.

For the fellow upland (and hound) hunters out there, the
Alpha and Astro tracking systems are definitely worth a look.  And if you don't hunt?  That's ok.
The Alpha should serve as a reminder that whatever your passion –
running, cycling, golfing, geocaching, hiking, hunting, boating, or flying –
you can count on Garmin to help lead the way.
