Have you heard about this yet? One of the two top digital map makers, NAVTEQ, just came out with a new product called Natural Guidance. What’s the big deal? Nothing really. Instead of saying turn left in 400 yards, it will say things like turn left at traffic signal, or even turn left at flower shop. We’re not sure how they’re going to categorize these reference points and landmarks for reliable navigation without confusing end users. It is not an easy problem since they have to consider things like which direction the user is approaching from, the size of the reference object (a cathedral vs. a corner pub), or whether it is winter or summer (when trees might block the visibility). Currently Natural Guidance is only available in select cities such as Berlin, Chicago, National Capital Region of Delhi, London, Los Angeles, New York, Munich and Paris. We also haven’t heard of a GPS navigation system making use of this new system just yet. Brought to you by your GPS navigation site NaviGadget . NAVTEQ Natural Guidance

Check out this X-Wing themed faux GPS navigation system from an Android app developer (Christopher Caleb) that also doubles as a clock with alarm features. Thanks to Adobe AIR for Android and some guidance from the force I’ve constructed a GPS-enabled version of the Targeting Computer found within Luke Skywalker’s X-wing Fighter. So now you can at least pretend to be an X-wing pilot while you’re driving your car. via and gizmodo Brought to you by your GPS navigation site NaviGadget .
We like the Spanish Vexia brand here at Navigadget. They just came out with a new version called the Vexia 420 Truck , a GPS navigation system for trucks. Garmin already had this ( nuvi 465t ) and now Vexia is giving it a try. The version that Vexia created – GPS Vexia 420 truck model is not stronger or bigger, but its software is designed so that the GPS does not play a trick on us and lead us to an alley that we can not leave. The GPS navigation software is configurable for trucks, buses, caravans and cars (with or without trailers) and Vexia 420 Truck takes into account characteristics such as weight, height, size and vehicle load when calculating routes for more than 40 countries in Europe. Once we set the parameters of our car and trailer, which is common these summer months, we can get just hit the road without worrying. If you are a truck driver options are endless, and can even indicate the type of merchandise we carry. Moreover, specifications of Vexia 420 Truck still include basic options such as lane assistant, tunnel mode, verbose output, road marking panel, highway assistant, speed warnings, navigation coordinates, default routes, exploration by map, as well as a wide base of points of interest. The price of Vexia Truck 420 is 270 Euros… via Brought to you by your GPS navigation site NaviGadget . Vexia 420 Truck GPS navigation system

Garmin just revealed some stats in one of their press releases – mostly the for the Europe crowd and found out that free GPS navigation on your smartphone – say from Google Maps – may cost you a lot of money in data charges when you’re roaming . “We tested the route from Calais to Paris four times and each time it came up with the same results: between 12-13 megabytes of data per journey. On a pay as you go mobile phone this meant £36 to £39 to get from Calais to Paris – some 185 miles on a contract plan the cost is a little less, but still equates to £24 to £26 per single journey.” Garmin got these numbers from using an Android phone on O2 from UK with a pay as you go plan . Their GPS navigation software was Google’s Google Maps Navigation and they say they turned off all other data services during these tests. So if you’re traveling abroad – Garmin suggests – you should consider getting yourself a stand alone GPS navigation system which start from £90.
Yep, you heard it right. This 200 dollar case from Magellan includes battery and its own GPS receiver for your iPhone. This must be the first of its kind. This iPhone is not only high tech but also very rugged and may give you a false sense of confidence that you can do anything just because you won’t scratch your fancy glass screen. Not to mention it is also IPX7 waterproof – meaning it can be immersed in 3 feet of water up to 30 minutes. Called ToughCase, Magellan made sure the device worked with both iPhone 3G/3GS and iPod Touch and you had access to all the functions of the device. As far as hardware specs Toughcase comes with a whopping 1840mAh battery which should double your phone’s life, and a SiRF Star III GPS receiver. Also the added GPS functionality should work with any GPS navigation app you wish; it doesn’t have to be Magellan’s own GPS navigation app . You can pick up Magellan’s ToughCase from their site or Apple Store. You don’t think you need a rugged case? Then maybe you’ll like their iPhone car kit we reviewed not too long ago. Brought to you by your GPS navigation site NaviGadget .
The Droid X we talked about last week has since been officially announced by Motorola and Verizon. Here is what we think: If Droid X won’t replace the stand alone GPS navigation system in your vehicle then we don’t know what will. Motorola must know this too so they even announced a car mount for the Droid X right away. With the Android OS you get Google Maps Navigation for free; or if you choose you can pay for onboard maps such as the one from CoPilot. Either way any GPS navigation software with 3D graphics should work just fine on the Droid X thanks to its 1Ghz processor. To make things even better the mount automatically triggers a dashboard app that gives you quick access to your music, internet radio, and of course GPS navigation app. It can connect to your car aux via the 3.5mm cable and keep your phone charged. Droid X has a 4.3″ touch screen display with 854×480 resolution, a camera with dual LED flash, auto focus that can capture 8MP photos and 720p videos. It has a 1540mAh battery, 8GB on board memory, and needless to say: aGPS, stand alone GPS, and electronic compass. It runs on Android 2.1 right now but will be upgraded to Android 2.2 to support flash format as well. Brought to you by your GPS navigation site NaviGadget .
We’ve been following TwoNav on Navigadget for a while now and now we’d like to introduce their app for the iPad. Actually it is a universal application that now works on the iPad like it did on the iPhone . What they’ve done is that the applications have the property to adapt to the platform you are using in that moment, adjusting well the size to the device’s screen in use. So you get a total of two licenses; one iPhone and one iPad per license. Some of the features of the TwoNav software include ability to record tracks, overlay road maps with topographic maps, door to door navigation (costs extra), precise altitude reading with geoide correction, and more. Here is current pricing: TwoNav iPhone/iPad Basic 49.99 € TwoNav iPhone/iPad Iberia 89.99 € TwoNav iPhone/iPad Italy 89.99 € TwoNav iPhone/iPad France 89.99 € TwoNav iPhone/iPad DACH 89.99 € Check it out here .
Lately things have been busy here at the Garmin Chicago Store ! In addition to helping customers find the perfect devices for the dads and grads season, and launching the Garminfone last week, we've been participating in a number of events around the downtown community of retailers. Last week the Chicago Store accepted an award from Oak Street Design for the “Best Use of Light” in the 2010 Show Your Style window competition. The Garmin-blue light towers that caught the judge’s attention were featured in the seasonal marine windows from mid-March to early June. Judges from the downtown retail community voted for the best in nine categories including “Best Use of Color,” “Best Use of Light,” and “Best Call to Action." Congratulations to the Garmin design team back at home for their creative design! Then on Sunday, June 13, the Chicago Store hosted “As Good as Gold” rescue shelter in conjunction with the annual "Angels with Tails" event. Each year PAWS (Pets Are Worth Saving) Chicago brings over 50 local animal shelters to the avenue, where visitors can meet rescued cats and dogs and learn more about adoption. Garmin hosted two golden retrievers, Rex and Sergeant, who entertained the customers just outside the store. Thanks to everyone who came out to support this great cause!
