dell-mini-10-gps
Dell Mini 10 now has GPS option. There aren’t that many netbooks out there that offer integrated GPS functionality (Mio Litepad N890 is one) so it is good to see more companies focusing on making GPS available at least as an option.

Anyhow, the GPS hardware they have on the Mini is called Dell Wireless 700 and it is not only a vanilla GPS receiver. It actually has built-in WiFi positioning too which makes it suitable to use indoors as well. The chip is provided by Broadcom.

The Dell Wireless 700 uses Wi-Fi access points and Long Term Orbit (LTO)-based Assisted-GPS (A-GPS) technology to determine location information. It provides a fast, accurate and reliable location source to applications and services by leveraging the strength of each underlying position technology.

Wi-Fi Positioning System (WPS) can determine the location of Wi-Fi enabled devices. All Wi-Fi Access Points broadcast a signal beacon known as a MAC address, notifying nearby devices of their presence. WPS refers to the mapped locations of millions of Wi-Fi MAC addresses to pinpoint the device location. WPS is complementary to GPS. It works best indoors and in urban areas, while GPS is limited by physical obstructions of ceilings and tall buildings.

Another nice thing about the Dell Mini 10 with GPS option is that it comes with CoPilot navigation software which can provide turn by turn directions.

The extra GPS option will cost you $70, however the version this will be available on will also have the HD display at 1366×768 resolution which is a nice plus… via

mapquest-iphone
Good ol’ Mapquest has an iPhone application capable of providing driving directions. Called Mapquest 4 Mobile this app doesn’t look like it can provide dynamic directions – such as “turn right on Main Street”. But it is pretty much like taking directions printout with you in the car – just like you did in late 90s. Kinda retro – but it’s free.

Something to consider in case you’re not interested in the paid GPS navigation system apps for iPhone.

Garmin-sponsored triathlete Jenna Shoemaker shares her training and racing experiences with the Garmin Edge 705 and Forerunner 405.

DCbike The Washington D.C. Dextro Energy World Championship Series race did not go as I had hoped, but that’s racing. There are plenty of ups and even more downs! The whole weekend was a little bit chaotic with lots of events going on and some issues the day before the race surrounding the water quality that almost turned the event into a duathlon. I had a very poor swim, finding myself in the middle of the “washing machine,” and ended up coming out of the water much further back than I normally do. From there, the race became a chase and unfortunately, the chase ended about 9k into the bike when I hit a large traffic cone in the middle of the bike course. I was at the back of the group, athletes ahead of me split right and left, and suddenly without warning, the cone was in front of me and I had no option but to hit it. I flipped off my bike, over my handlebars and landed on the left side of my head. I can remember seeing the ground and asking myself “can I get up and finish the race,” but the next thing I knew, I was lying on a gurney in an ambulance trying to remember my name, birthday and mother’s contact information. CT scans revealed no fractures or bleeding in my head or pelvis, but they concluded, based on the time that I was “out,” that I had suffered a grade 3 concussion, the most severe.

So, instead of flying to Des Moines to race the Hy-Vee Elite Cup, I flew to Boulder for a week of recuperation. I took 2 days off from training to let my body settle, but I am now back into training and am excited to get ready for my next big event in Hamburg, Germany at the end of July. I just got my hands on the Garmin Forerunner 310XT, so I have a new toy to make training this coming month even more exciting!  I love the way this particular model fits my wrist and I am really looking forward to taking it on some open water swims!

We wish Jenna a speedy recovery so she can dive back into full training mode before her next big race. Congrats to her brother, Jarrod Shoemaker, for his 5th place finish at yesterday’s Hy-Vee Triathlon. Read about Jarrod and Jenna’s family reunion prior to the Washington D.C. race.

The next time there’s a Homeland Security drill, they will be avoiding heavy traffic and traffic incidents using the Inrix data and capabilities to help speed the response. The data will be used by GeoDecisions’ IRRIS portal to help the military and Homeland security with accurate traffic flow and incident reporting.

“With the ability to access INRIX’s comprehensive yet precise traffic information, customers using GeoDecisions’ IRRIS portal will be better able to anticipate traffic congestion and hazardous road conditions and plan or adapt their routes accordingly,” said Bryan Mistele, INRIX president and CEO. “Together with GeoDecisions we are helping the U.S. military and Homeland Security optimize their logistical operations to ensure they have the safest and most efficient means available for transportation routing.”

This comes on the heels of Inrix being selected to provide data to TomTom as part of their LIVE capabilities in the US.
